Delta lawmakers push for higher standards in MDAs ahead of 2026 fiscal year

The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Urban Renewal has called on the Ministry of Urban Renewal and Physical Planning to elevate its operational standards as preparations intensify for the 2026 budget year.

Committee Chairman, Mr Pereotu Oloye, said this on Tuesday during the ministry’s 2026 budget defence session at the Assembly Complex in Asaba.

While commending the ministry for what he described as “credible progress” in its 2025 performance, Oloye said the achievements must translate into even higher efficiency in the year ahead.

According to him, the ministry’s project execution record and adherence to its mandate reflected renewed dedication to structured and sustainable urban development across Delta State.

However, Oloye, who represents Burutu II Constituency, stressed that certain lapses particularly in documentation and reporting—needed urgent attention.

He said strengthening these processes was essential for maintaining public confidence and ensuring full accountability in government operations.

The chairman emphasised the need for stronger alignment with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which focused on sustainable cities, planned urban expansion, and improved quality of life for residents.

Earlier in the session, Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Mr. Michael Anoka, outlined the ministry’s progress in upgrading key urban centres, noting that it was now poised to consolidate gains made in the outgoing year.

He revealed that new reforms in physical planning would help boost internally generated revenue beginning in 2026.

Anoka also announced that the long-awaited master plans for Asaba and Warri, which are expected to guide the long-term development of the state’s two largest cities, were nearing completion and would soon be unveiled to the public.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Assembly will continue its sector-by-sector budget scrutiny in the coming days as part of efforts to ensure a more transparent and result-oriented 2026 fiscal cycle.
