NFF honors Troost-Ekong as he retires from Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has paid tribute to William Troost-Ekong, captain of the Super Eagles, following his announcement of immediate retirement from international football after a decade of distinguished service.

In a statement released on Thursday, the NFF described Troost-Ekong as a “dedicated, selfless and humble leader” whose unwavering commitment to the national team set a benchmark for professionalism and patriotism in Nigerian football.

Troost-Ekong made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2015 and went on to earn 83 caps, participating in five major competitions, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup and three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (2019, 2021, and 2023).

During his career, he helped Nigeria secure silver and bronze medals at AFCON and became a central figure both on and off the pitch.

The NFF highlighted his discipline, ambition, and positive influence, noting that even before assuming the captaincy, Troost-Ekong consistently demonstrated joy and focus while donning the national colors.

His performances at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire were particularly lauded, where he scored crucial goals to help Nigeria reach the final and earned the Man of the Competition award, marking the first time in decades a Nigerian claimed the AFCON MVP honor.

The federation emphasized that Troost-Ekong leaves the international stage “a fulfilled man”, with his decade-long service providing a lasting example for younger generations of Nigerian players.

“As he retires from the international game, the Nigeria Football Federation wishes William Troost-Ekong the very best in his future endeavors and will support him in achieving his goals within the round-leather game,” the NFF said.
