Gov. Fubara hails education as key to economic growth at RSU convocation

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, has underscored education as the most vital investment for a nation’s economic success, praising Rivers State University (RSU) for fulfilling its mission of delivering world-class education and shaping future leaders.
Governor Fubara made the remarks during the combined 37th and 38th convocation of RSU, where he pledged continued support for funding and improving the learning environment.
“RSU was established to provide world-class education, encourage critical thinking, and nurture leaders who will contribute to the growth of communities, the state, and the nation.
”I am delighted to see these goals being realized as 13,242 students receive graduate and postgraduate degrees, certificates, and diplomas,” Fubara said.
The governor urged the university management to prioritise research and innovation, calling for practical solutions to societal challenges.
He emphasised the development of local technologies to enhance human security, foster economic growth, create jobs, and promote sustainable development.
Fubara also pledged that his administration would continue funding the university, providing necessary infrastructure, and ensuring the safety and well-being of both staff and students.
“Education is the most crucial investment for a nation’s economic success. We cannot afford to deprive our youths of the tools they need to improve their lives,” he added.
Acknowledging existing challenges within the university and the wider state education system, the governor committed to implementing lasting reforms rather than temporary measures to strengthen the educational framework and achieve meaningful outcomes.
Addressing the graduands, Fubara described the convocation as the start of a new chapter in their lives, full of opportunities, challenges, and choices.
He urged them to uphold integrity, honesty, and hard work, and to become job creators to help reduce unemployment and insecurity.
He also encouraged them to explore economic opportunities across various sectors of the state.
In his remarks, RSU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, thanked Governor Fubara for appointing him on March 6, 2025.
