ECOWAS condemns attempted military coup in Benin Republic

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly denounced the attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, calling for strict adherence to the country’s constitution and democratic principles.
The incident unfolded on Sunday when a faction of soldiers announced that they had ousted President Patrice Talon.
However, officials close to the presidency confirmed that Talon was safe and that the regular army was regaining control of the situation.
In a statement issued from Abuja, ECOWAS expressed deep concern over the coup attempt and warned those involved that they would be held accountable for any harm to life or property resulting from their actions.
The regional bloc further pledged its support to the government and people of Benin in defending the nation’s constitution and territorial integrity.
The group of soldiers, identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), appeared on state television claiming that President Talon had been removed from office.
The move follows a recent wave of military takeovers in the region, including coups in Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, and comes amid heightened tensions in neighboring countries such as Niger and Burkina Faso.
The French Embassy in Benin confirmed reports of gunfire near Camp Guezo, close to the president’s official residence in Cotonou, the country’s economic capital. French authorities advised their citizens to remain indoors for safety.
Despite the announcement by the soldiers, Talon’s aides maintained that the situation was under control.
“This is a small group that only controls the television station. The regular army is taking back control. The city and the country remain completely secure,” the presidency told AFP.
Benin’s political history has been marked by numerous coups and attempted coups, making this latest development a worrying reminder of the fragility of democratic governance in the country.
ECOWAS has urged all stakeholders in Benin to respect democratic norms and to work towards restoring stability in the nation.
