Northern elders criticise Marafa over call for U.S. military intervention

A prominent Northern advocacy group has strongly condemned former Zamfara lawmaker, Senator Kabiru Marafa, over his controversial call for the United States to intervene militarily in Nigeria, describing the remarks as reckless and unpatriotic.

The Northern Elders’ Political Forum, speaking through its National Coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar, issued a statement on Sunday following its annual meeting in Birnin Kebbi.

The Forum said Marafa’s comments were “ridiculous” and tantamount to inciting chaos in the country. They urged the Department of State Services (DSS) to take appropriate action against him.

Abubakar also suggested that anyone making such statements, irrespective of their political status, should be subjected to a psychiatric evaluation to determine their mental stability.

“We view this kind of statement as a demonstration of unpatriotism, bordering on mental instability,” he said.

The Forum also called on Northern political leaders and governors to unite in addressing pressing issues such as insecurity and poverty, rather than exploiting them for political gains.

Additionally, they recommended that security agencies investigate some politicians in Zamfara and Katsina states who allegedly use media platforms to spread false information capable of inflaming tensions.

While criticising Marafa, the group commended the Federal Government’s ongoing security operations, including Operation Fasan Yamma, for addressing threats in the region.

They also appealed to traditional and religious leaders to leverage their influence positively by praying for national unity and stability, while rejecting calls to remove the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, from office.

The statement comes amid growing concerns about political rhetoric in Northern Nigeria, with the Forum emphasizing that patriotism and responsible leadership should guide public discourse on security challenges rather than provocative and potentially destabilizing remarks.
