PDP is back,’ Turaki declares after meeting with Obasanjo

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is preparing to reclaim its position in Nigeria’s political landscape, National Chairman Kabiru Turaki declared following a significant meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The visit, which saw prominent PDP leaders in attendance, underscored the party’s commitment to regaining political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking after the closed-door discussion, Turaki reaffirmed the PDP’s determination to secure victories in upcoming state elections, specifically in Ekiti and Osun, as a prelude to the 2027 general elections.

“We are ready to win the upcoming off-season governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states.

“This is just the beginning. PDP is battle-ready for 2027,” he said.

The meeting at Obasanjo’s Presidential Library was not just a gesture of respect for the former president’s role in the party’s history but also a strategic move to seek his guidance as the party prepares for the electoral challenges ahead.

Turaki, accompanied by other top PDP officials including former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, ex-governors Muazu Babangida Aliyu and Jonah Jang, and the party’s National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, reflected on the achievements of the PDP’s founding fathers.

“We came to thank Baba (Obasanjo) for his invaluable contributions to the party and the country.

“His leadership laid the foundation for the democratic institutions we continue to benefit from today.

”We have come seeking his wisdom as we navigate the tough road ahead,” he said.

Turaki also emphasised the importance of learning from experience, drawing on a proverb to underline the value of Obasanjo’s long-standing political expertise: “A woman who has been cooking longer than you is bound to have more broken pots.”

He further noted that while the road to 2027 might be challenging, the party’s resolve has been strengthened through the insights gained from the former president.

The PDP Chairman revealed the party’s strategic approach: “Our first target is to reclaim Ekiti State, followed by Osun.

”Once we secure these victories, it will be clear that the PDP is on the rise and ready to challenge the APC government’s failures.”

Turaki also stressed the need for unity within the party, urging members to set aside past divisions.

“The APC is now more concerned than ever about the PDP’s resurgence. The political equation has changed, and we are preparing to send them packing in 2027,” he declared.

Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, who was also part of the delegation, described the meeting as a “new dawn” for the party.

“The mood in the party has changed. Members are reinvigorated, and the era of internal divisions is over. We are united and ready to reclaim leadership in 2027,” he said.

Tella also warned that the mistakes of 2023, especially during the Remo Federal Constituency by-election, would not be repeated.

“What happened in 2023 will not happen again. We will not allow any form of disenfranchisement in 2027.

”The people are tired of the current government, and the PDP will give them a choice,” he added.

The leaders left the meeting with renewed determination, confident that with the support of Nigerians, the PDP will take back its position in the upcoming elections.

The PDP’s 2027 campaign strategy has now shifted into high gear, with a clear focus on rebuilding and consolidating support in key states, starting with Ekiti and Osun.

Whether this marks the start of a successful political revival for the party will unfold in the coming years.
