Ooni of Ife honours Ghanaian President Mahama with chieftaincy title

In a festive ceremony on Monday, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, awarded a chieftaincy title to Ghana’s President, John Mahama.
The event coincided with celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Oba Ogunwusi’s coronation.
President Mahama received the title “Atayeto of Oodua of the Source” in recognition of his efforts to strengthen Ghana’s economy and his contributions to the broader African continent.
The Ooni described Mahama as a close ally and long-time supporter, recalling his involvement during the Ooni’s ascension.
“This palace has been familiar to you for years, and you have stood with us through important moments,” the Ooni said, praising Mahama’s leadership, vision, and influence both regionally and internationally.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, highlighted Mahama’s peace-building efforts, particularly his role in mediating between ECOWAS and countries in the Sahel region during periods of tension.
Adeleke called the recognition well-deserved, noting Mahama’s dedication to diplomacy and regional stability.
President Mahama thanked the Ooni for the honor and reflected on the support he received from Ile-Ife after his 2016 electoral loss.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, acknowledging his mentorship and friendship.
Mahama pledged to continue fostering stronger ties between Ghana and Nigeria and encouraged collaboration among West African nations.
The ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, business leaders including Aliko Dangote, and international dignitaries such as former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
