Rivers INEC begins display of preliminary voter register, calls on citizens to verify records

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State has begun displaying the preliminary voter register, inviting the public to check their records and report any discrepancies.

Professor Gabriel Yomere, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers, made the announcement during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Represented by Mrs. Angela Ebhodaghe, the Administrative Secretary, he explained that the exercise is aimed at ensuring the voter register is accurate and credible ahead of upcoming elections.

The display period will run from December 15 to 21, allowing residents to scrutinize the register and report errors such as omissions, incorrect entries, inclusion of deceased individuals, underage or ineligible voters, and other inaccuracies.

“This is an opportunity for registrants to confirm their details and alert the commission to any mistakes,” Yomere said.

He emphasised that the exercise is taking place nationwide and that all 23 local government areas in Rivers State are participating.

Since the start of the in-person Continuous Voter Registration, INEC has recorded 99,885 completed registrations in the state.

Yomere noted that this figure is provisional and would be verified through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

The Resident Electoral Commissioner also urged the media to collaborate with INEC in disseminating accurate information about the exercise, stating, “We depend on the media to educate the public on our activities and to build confidence in the electoral process.”
