Ahmed Musa bids farewell to Super Eagles, reflects on 15-year career

Nigeria’s most capped footballer, Ahmed Musa, has officially retired from international football, bringing to a close a distinguished career that spanned nearly 15 years and included triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Leicester City forward, who is affectionately nicknamed “Governor,” announced his decision on Wednesday, describing his time with the Super Eagles as a source of immense pride.

In an emotional statement, Musa thanked his teammates, coaches, backroom staff, and the Nigerian fans at home and abroad for their unwavering support.

“Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning.

“I know I gave my best. I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward. And I know that this bond will never be broken. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle, ” he said.

Musa’s illustrious career with the national team is highlighted by his performances at the FIFA World Cup.

He remains Nigeria’s highest scorer at the tournament, netting four goals, including a memorable brace against Argentina in Brazil 2014.

He repeated the feat at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, helping the Super Eagles secure a 2-0 victory over Iceland.

The 33-year-old began his career with Kano Pillars before venturing to Europe, playing for clubs such as CSKA Moscow, VV Venlo, and Turkish sides Karagümrük and Sivasspor.

He also had a successful stint at Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, where he contributed to their league title triumph.

Musa returned to Kano Pillars in September 2024 as a player and later assumed the role of general manager.

His retirement follows that of defender William Troost-Ekong, marking a period of transition for the national team.

Despite his absence from active play in the 2023 AFCON, Musa’s contributions and leadership over the years have left an enduring legacy.

As he steps away from the international stage, Musa’s commitment to Nigerian football continues through his involvement at the club level and his mentorship of the next generation of players.
