APC confirms defection of Plateau governor Mutfwang

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed the defection of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking another major political shift ahead of future electoral contests.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yelwata, during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Yelwata, who hails from Plateau State, said the governor’s decision further strengthens the ruling party’s presence in the North-Central region.
According to him, Mutfwang’s defection means that all states in the North-Central zone are now under the control of the APC.
The Plateau governor was elected on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 general elections and is the latest in a series of high-profile defections from the opposition party.
The development comes amid an aggressive expansion drive by the ruling party, which has continued to attract governors and key political figures from across the country.
At the same meeting, the APC leadership announced a nationwide electronic membership registration exercise.
Yelwata disclosed that all party members have been given until January 30, 2026, to complete their registration on the digital platform.
He explained that the initiative was aimed at strengthening internal democracy, improving transparency and ensuring accurate membership records.
Party stakeholders were urged to support the process and mobilise both existing and new members to participate fully ahead of forthcoming congresses.
The caucus meeting was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, leaders of the National Assembly, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC governors, past governors and other senior party officials.
Several governors who recently joined the APC were also present, underscoring the party’s growing influence and consolidation of power nationwide.
