Tinubu appoints Oseni as chairman, reconstitutes NERC board

President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), with Musiliu Oseni appointed as its new chairman.

The development was confirmed on Thursday by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, following the Senate’s confirmation of the commission’s members.

Oseni’s appointment as chairman took effect from December 1, 2025, and would run until the end of his statutory 10-year tenure, in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.

Oseni has been a member of the commission since January 2017 and previously served as its vice chairman before his elevation to the top position.

Yusuf Ali was named vice chairman of the board.

He was first appointed as a commissioner in February 2022, and his new role also commenced on Dec. 1, 2025, to last until the completion of his current term.

Other members of the reconstituted board included Nathan Shatti, Dafe Akpeneye, Aisha Bello and Chidi Ike, all of whom are serving second terms as commissioners, having been appointed at different times between 2017 and 2022.

Fouad Animashaun joins the board for the first time as a commissioner, with his tenure beginning in December 2025.

The presidency described him as an energy economist with extensive experience in the power sector.

Until his appointment, he served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

President Tinubu has charged the newly constituted board to build on ongoing reforms in the electricity sector and ensure strict adherence to the objectives and provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s power industry.
