NCAA grants aerodrome certification to Kano and Port Harcourt airports

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has formally certified Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) and Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport (JOAIA) as meeting international safety and operational standards.

A move aimed at boosting confidence in the country’s aviation sector.

Speaking during the certification ceremony in Abuja, NCAA Director-General, Capt. Chris Najomo, described the issuance of aerodrome certificates as a globally recognised validation of airport safety, infrastructure quality, and operational efficiency.

He noted that the certification also strengthens the airports’ standing with insurers, often resulting in improved insurance terms and conditions for airlines, service providers, and airport operators.

“The certificate is more than a formality; it is a seal of assurance for passengers, investors, and aviation stakeholders that these airports operate according to international benchmarks,” Najomo said.

He explained that certification ensures functional safety management systems and demonstrates compliance with rigorous aviation standards.

Capt. Najomo highlighted that with the addition of MAKIA and JOAIA, four out of Nigeria’s five designated international airports are now fully certified.

The other certified airports include Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, leaving only one airport pending certification.

The certification process, Najomo explained, involved multiple inspections, issuance of corrective action notices, and the submission of detailed corrective action plans by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to address any gaps identified during evaluations.

He emphasised that the certification aligns with the Aviation Minister’s strategic agenda and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focus on improving infrastructure, institutional capacity, and service delivery across key national sectors.

FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, who received the certificates on behalf of the airports, described the process as thorough and demanding.

She highlighted the close collaboration between FAAN and NCAA, noting that the certification reflects both regulatory oversight and operational excellence.

“This is a shared achievement that underscores our commitment to aviation safety and national interest,” Kuku said.

The Director-General reaffirmed that NCAA would continue to monitor compliance through surveillance, guidance, and engagement with aerodrome operators.

He added that the authority remains committed to adopting technology-driven operations, transparent processes, and continuous improvement to support the growth and global competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

According to Capt. Najomo, the certificates provide assurance to airlines, passengers, and investors that MAKIA and JOAIA are now fully compliant with international standards, enhancing Nigeria’s aviation credibility and competitiveness in the global aviation market.
