Nigerian Air Force confirms safe movement of C-130 aircraft after precautionary landing in Burkina Faso
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reassured the public about the safety of its C-130 aircraft and crew following an unscheduled landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, which triggered widespread speculation on social media.
The aircraft, carrying 11 personnel, was on a routine ferry mission from Lagos to Portugal for scheduled depot maintenance when a technical issue was detected shortly after takeoff on 8 December 2025.
Acting in accordance with international aviation safety protocols, the crew opted to land at the nearest suitable airfield to ensure their safety.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, clarified that the landing was purely precautionary and posed no risk to the crew or aircraft.
“This is standard procedure in aviation. The safety of our personnel and aircraft is our top priority,” he stated.
Despite the official explanation, rumours circulated online suggesting the aircraft had been forced to land due to airspace violations or espionage allegations.
Some reports claimed the crew had been detained by Burkinabe authorities. However, the NAF dismissed these claims, noting that the personnel were treated with courtesy and professionalism throughout their stay.
The situation drew attention from diplomatic channels, including engagements between the military leadership of Burkina Faso and a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maitama Tuggar.
Nevertheless, Air Commodore Ejodame confirmed that the aircraft departed Burkina Faso safely on Friday evening and arrived in Accra, Ghana, in line with a revised flight plan.
The aircraft is scheduled to continue its journey to Portugal via Banjul and Casablanca for maintenance.
The NAF expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their concern and reassured the public that all personnel remain safe, the aircraft is fully serviceable, and the Air Force continues to operate with the highest standards of professionalism and safety.
