Otti says visit to Kanu was not politically motivated, emphasises dialogue, peace

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, has clarified that his recent visit to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Sokoto Correctional Centre was not driven by political ambition.
Speaking on Friday during a visit by the Abia Diaspora Commission and the medical team of the Abia Global Medical Mission 2025 to the Government House in Umuahia, Otti addressed circulating social media criticism of his visit.
He stressed that his trip was motivated by the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution rather than any desire to contest future elections.
“One of the issues raised was my ambition after serving as governor
“I have repeatedly stated that upon completing my tenure, I will retire from public office.
”I have no presidential, vice-presidential, or senatorial ambitions. My mission is to serve, and once accomplished, I will step aside to make room for younger leaders, ” he said.
Otti dismissed claims linking his actions to the idea of an “Igbo presidency,” calling such arguments unfounded.
He reiterated that his intervention regarding Kanu began two years ago and was focused on fostering dialogue at the highest levels of government.
He condemned the military operation known as Operation Python Dance and emphasised that his visit should not be interpreted as support for any movement advocating for Nigeria’s disintegration.
“Dialogue does not equate to supporting secession. There are always ways to solve problems peacefully, and conflicts ultimately end at negotiation tables,” Otti said.
Addressing broader security concerns, the governor warned that insecurity was being exploited by criminal elements to harm innocent citizens.
He vowed that his administration would respond firmly to violence while continuing to pursue peace responsibly.
“We will do everything possible to ensure peace in Abia State.
“Violence will be confronted, but we must act responsibly as a government.
”Peace is essential for development and progress, ” he said.
Otti urged stakeholders and citizens to support dialogue-driven solutions, stressing that negotiation and engagement are preferable to conflict.
He reaffirmed his commitment to creating a secure environment for residents and businesses in Abia.
