FG declares Dec. 25, 26, Jan. 1 public holidays

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, December 25; Thursday, December 26; and Thursday, January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year celebrations.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who said the holidays were approved to enable Nigerians across the country to fully observe and celebrate the festive season.

In a statement, the minister urged citizens to reflect on the core values associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, including love, peace, humility, and sacrifice.

He also called on Nigerians, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, to use the holiday period to pray for national peace, improved security, and overall progress.

Tunji-Ojo further advised the public to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations, emphasising the need for collective responsibility during the festive season.

He wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
