Akpabio honours fallen heroes as pillars of national unity

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday paid tribute to Nigeria’s fallen military heroes, describing their sacrifices as the enduring foundation for national unity, peace, and progress.

Akpabio delivered the message during the Third Inter-Denominational Church Service marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Abuja.

Represented at the service by Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Peter Nwebonyi, the Senate President likened the blood of fallen service personnel to that of Christian martyrs, emphasising its role in shaping Nigeria’s collective future.

“It is my honour to join this solemn gathering to reflect, pray, and pay homage to our gallant brothers and sisters,” Akpabio said.

He underscored the country’s diversity and the shared values that unite Nigerians under one flag, reiterating the Constitution’s guarantee of freedom of religion and conscience as pillars that must always be protected.

Akpabio reassured citizens that both the Federal Government and the National Assembly remain committed to restoring Nigeria as one of Africa’s most peaceful nations.

“The sacrifices we commemorate today strengthen our resolve to build a safer, stronger, and more united country,” he added.

Akpabio also thanked Nigerians for their solidarity, urging continued support for the armed forces.

In a vote of thanks, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), expressed appreciation for the prayers and backing received by the military.

He emphasised that the Federal Government is committed to improving welfare, motivation, and operational readiness of service personnel, assuring that the contributions of fallen heroes would never be forgotten.

Prayers were offered for the eternal rest of the fallen heroes, while serving military personnel were asked for divine protection and wisdom as they continue to safeguard the nation.

The service drew high-ranking government officials, legislators, diplomats, clergy, service chiefs, and members of the public. Security was maintained by personnel from the armed forces, police, and other paramilitary agencies throughout the event.
