Jonathan leads AU, COMESA, IGAD election observation in Uganda

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has arrived in Kampala to lead the joint African Union (AU), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission ahead of Uganda’s scheduled general elections on January 15, 2026.
Jonathan, who has previously served as a key figure in continental election monitoring, was warmly received by Ugandan officials upon arrival, as well as staff from the AU and the Nigerian High Commission in Kampala.
In a statement, Jonathan expressed his gratitude for the reception and extended best wishes to the Ugandan electorate.
“I thank the Ugandan officials, as well as the staff of AU and Nigerian High Commission in Kampala for a warm reception,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process, noting that such practices were essential for consolidating democracy in Uganda and enhancing governance across Africa.
“I wish the people of the Republic of Uganda a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process towards consolidating democracy in the country and improving the course of governance on the continent,” Jonathan added.
The mission led by Jonathan is part of a broader continental effort to ensure that elections in Africa are conducted in accordance with international best practices, with a focus on transparency, inclusiveness, and respect for the will of the people.
The Ugandan elections, closely watched both regionally and internationally, are expected to set the tone for governance and democratic practices in the East African nation and offer insights into broader continental trends.
Jonathan and his team will monitor voting procedures, ballot counting, and adherence to electoral guidelines throughout the election period.
Officials from the AU, COMESA, and IGAD, alongside civil society representatives, will accompany Jonathan in assessing the conduct of the elections and providing recommendations to strengthen democratic institutions in Uganda and the wider region.
