Rivers family of 6 found dead in Ogale community, police investigate

The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the mysterious death of six members of a family in Ogale community, Eleme Local Government Area.

The victims, a father, mother, three children, and a relative were discovered lifeless in their residence on Sunday morning by neighbours, prompting immediate police attention.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that operatives from the Eleme Division had forced entry into the locked rooms after receiving a distress call from Godwin Ogosu, who reported that his elder brother and his family had failed to wake up.

The deceased have been identified as:Theophilus Obele, 49
Eunice Obele, 35
Saka Obele, 18
Peace Obele, 14
Nyimenka Obele, 7
Abel Nwaka, 25

CSP Iringe-Koko noted that all victims were found in their rooms with doors locked from the inside, and preliminary investigations suggest possible carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator reportedly left running in the parlour.

“Operatives discovered the bodies following the distress call and have documented photographic evidence while the investigation continues,” she said.

The corpses have been deposited at the Last Home Mortuary, Ebubu, for autopsy, while authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, directed a thorough probe and urged residents to exercise caution when using generators, stressing the need to place them outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from doors and windows to prevent poisoning.

The Police Command also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the tragedy as “deeply saddening” and emphasizing that public safety and awareness remain a priority.
