Bayelsa students place 3rd at national engineering contest

Students of Bishop Dimeari Grammar School (BDGS), Yenagoa, have secured third place at the National Young Engineers and Future Leaders Secondary Schools Competition held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The achievement is credited to Bayelsa State Education Development Trust Fund’s (EDTF) investment in coding and robotics for secondary schools.
Masters Charis Gabriel and Fetongha Wilberforce, both SS2 students, impressed judges with their project titled Flood Detective and Emergency Response, demonstrating innovative coding and robotics solutions.
Reacting, Gabriel, Wilberforce, and their ICT tutor, Arnold Ayebadieye, expressed gratitude to the EDTF for providing the opportunity, noting that the introduction of coding and robotics significantly enhanced their skills and confidence.
Principal of BDGS, Mrs. Beauty Asamawei, praised the Fund for its continuous support and for sponsoring the students’ participation in the national competition.
“Our students traveled to Ibadan under the sponsorship of the EDTF and returned with laurels, bringing joy to the school and the community,” she said.
Receiving the students and school officials in his office, EDTF Executive Secretary Professor Ebimieowei Etebu commended the team for making Bayelsa State proud.
He said the success reflects the value of investing in coding and robotics programs, which nurture young scientists capable of solving real-world problems.
The competition began at the state level, where BDGS emerged the winner to represent Bayelsa at the regional and national stages.
At the finals hosted at the University of Ibadan, Shalom Science and Technical College, Enugu, won first place, Kings College, Lagos, came second, while BDGS finished third. BDGS received a cash prize of N350,000.
The EDTF remains committed to providing educational support that equips students with the skills needed to compete nationally and contribute to technological and scientific development in Bayelsa State.
