U.S. delivers military equipment to Nigeria to boost security operations

The United States has shipped a fresh consignment of military equipment to Nigerian security forces, reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s capacity to tackle rising insecurity, AFRICOM announced on Tuesday.

In a post on its verified X account, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) described the delivery as a demonstration of the “shared security partnership” between Washington and Abuja.

“US forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja.

”This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasises our shared security partnership,” the statement read.

The delivery comes amid escalating violence across Nigeria, including kidnappings, attacks on civilians, and insurgent activity in several regions.

The move also followed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who hinted that American forces could consider further airstrikes against terrorist groups if attacks on Christian communities persist.

Previous U.S. air operations targeted suspected terrorist strongholds in North-West Nigeria on Christmas Day.

Security analysts have warned that any additional foreign military action must be coordinated closely with the Nigerian military and receive explicit approval from the Nigerian President, in line with national sovereignty and international law.

AFRICOM, however, did not disclose the specific nature of the equipment supplied, and Nigerian authorities have yet to confirm receipt.

The latest shipment continued a pattern of military support from the U.S.

In February 2021, Washington provided Nigeria with communications and tactical equipment, including encrypted satellite phones, night-vision goggles, and other counter-terrorism assets, as part of a programme to enhance the country’s air and artillery capabilities.

Analysts said the latest support underscored the deepening defence collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, particularly as the country struggles to contain the growing threat posed by insurgents and armed criminal groups.
