Rivers lawmakers retreat from Fubara impeachment push

The campaign to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, from office in Rivers State has lost momentum as two more members of the state House of Assembly publicly withdrew their support.
Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, announced their reversal on Wednesday during a press briefing.
They cited appeals from senior political leaders and community stakeholders for calm and dialogue.
The move comes just days after Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency had taken similar steps.
While the lawmakers acknowledged possible breaches of constitutional provisions by the governor and deputy, they emphasised that maintaining stability in the state is now the priority.
“Peaceful resolution is far more beneficial than prolonged confrontation,” Nwakoh stated, adding that the state could not afford political turbulence.
With the latest withdrawals, four of the 26 legislators who initially backed the impeachment have stepped back, signaling a shift toward negotiation rather than aggressive political action.
The House is scheduled to resume plenary on January 15, and the leadership faces the challenge of bridging divisions while steering the assembly toward productive outcomes.
Earlier this week, Nwankwo and Abbey urged their colleagues to pursue non-confrontational solutions, warning that ongoing tensions could disrupt governance and public confidence in the state.
“The focus should be on constructive engagement and ensuring government functions smoothly,” Abbey told reporters.
