U.S. embassy reopens modernised American centre in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has officially reopened its newly redesigned American Centre at the Embassy Chancery, showcasing American innovation, culture, and the enduring partnership between the United States and Nigeria.

The upgraded facility features modern learning spaces and advanced digital technology, aimed at expanding educational, cultural, and professional opportunities for Nigerians of all ages.

Programmes at the centre include English language teaching, study advising for U.S. institutions, cultural initiatives, professional skills development, and networking opportunities with alumni of U.S. exchange programmes.

Speaking at the reopening, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., emphasised the role of the American Centre and other American Spaces in fostering learning and opportunity.

“We are proud to reopen the American Centre as a space that celebrates American excellence in arts and reflects the values that define our nation.

“American Spaces have become trusted venues for young people seeking opportunities to learn about the United States, improve their English, and develop professional skills, ” he said.

Mills highlighted that through educational advising, entrepreneurship training, and digital literacy initiatives, the centre equips Nigerians with tools to thrive in a rapidly changing global economy.

A prominent feature of the redesigned facility is a series of murals celebrating American history, culture, and shared values such as freedom, innovation, and community.

The Ambassador noted that the individuals depicted in the artworks exemplify hard work, determination, and perseverance qualities he said were evident among Nigerian youth.

Lee McManis, Country Public Diplomacy Counselor, stated that the Abuja American Centre now joined 29 other American Spaces across Nigeria, which serve as hubs for cultural exchange and learning.

“Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the centre will foster meaningful connections and provide new opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing,” McManis said.

The U.S. Embassy affirmed its commitment to expanding access to programmes and resources that strengthen bilateral ties, promote understanding of the United States, and connect aspiring leaders with opportunities.

The reopening ceremony ended with in-person and virtual participation, with the Embassy encouraging Nigerians to follow its platforms for updates on upcoming initiatives.
