Bayelsa governor urges public support for Armed Forces on remembrance day

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa, has called on individuals and corporate organisations to provide more support for Nigeria’s armed forces, stressing the need to improve the welfare and conditions of service of military personnel.

Diri made the appeal during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at Peace Park, Yenagoa.

He honoured the courage and sacrifices of soldiers, both serving and retired as well as those who gave their lives to safeguard Nigeria’s unity and territorial integrity.

“Today is a day to remember and appreciate the sacrifices of those who ensure our peace and security.

“Families who lost loved ones, veterans living with physical and emotional scars, and those still in service all deserve our respect and support, ” he said.

He emphasised that the armed forces are vital to national security and warned that the country’s stability relies on their dedication.

Diri also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and military leaders for initiatives aimed at enhancing soldiers’ welfare.

Highlighting his administration’s commitment to the military, Diri noted the recent completion and handover of residential facilities to the Nigerian Army’s 16 Brigade in Elebele.

He also encouraged closer collaboration between the army and the state government, particularly in agriculture, to boost local food security and sustainable livelihoods.

The governor urged citizens and businesses to contribute to programmes that benefit the armed forces, ensuring those who risk their lives for national safety are adequately supported.
