Tinubu pays tribute to fallen soldiers, backs armed forces

President Bola Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s fallen military heroes and reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare and professionalism of the Armed Forces as the nation marked the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the President reflected on the sacrifices of men and women who lost their lives in defence of the country, noting that their courage continues to sustain Nigeria’s freedom and stability.

He alos stressed that national progress is tied to remembering those who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.

President Tinubu further extended heartfelt words to the families of deceased soldiers, acknowledging the depth of their loss and assuring them that the nation remains grateful for the sacrifices of their loved ones.

According to him, while the fallen may not always be mentioned by name, their legacy remains firmly etched in Nigeria’s history.

While paying homage to those who died in active service, the President also commended officers and men currently serving across the country and beyond.

He praised their discipline, bravery and professionalism, describing their role in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty as both demanding and noble.

Reaffirming his position as Commander-in-Chief, Tinubu pledged continued support for the Armed Forces, emphasising improved welfare, dignity and operational backing for personnel deployed on land, sea and air.

He assured troops that the nation stands firmly behind them in the discharge of their duties.

The President was represented at the national ceremony in Abuja by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who joined other top government officials at the wreath-laying event held at the cenotaph.

Among those in attendance were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa and other senior officials.

The ceremony featured a solemn march to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, interfaith prayers led by Christian and Muslim clerics, a minute of silence and the firing of a gun salute in honour of fallen heroes.

Observed annually on January 15, Armed Forces Remembrance Day is dedicated to honouring veterans of the world wars, the Nigerian Civil War and members of the Armed Forces who have served and sacrificed in defence of the nation.
