President Tinubu, others celebrate chief Bisi Akande on 87th birthday

Chief Bisi Akande, the pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Osun State, turned 87 on January 16, 2026, prompting tributes from political leaders and party members who praised his lifelong service, integrity, and contributions to democracy in Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu lauded Akande as an elder statesman whose leadership, wisdom, and dedication helped shape the APC and the nation.
In a statement, Tinubu highlighted Akande’s early career as an accountant with British Petroleum, his public service as Secretary to the old Oyo State Government, Deputy Governor, and later Governor of Osun State.
He noted that as Interim Chairman of APC, Akande “laid the building blocks for a political edifice that, for the first time in Nigeria’s political history, unseated an incumbent in the centre in 2015.”
Tinubu further praised Akande’s unwavering support for his administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing him as a mentor, moral compass, and tireless advocate for democracy, social justice, and good governance.
Other prominent figures, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, also congratulated Akande.
Sanwo-Olu described him as a role model and advocate of good governance, true federalism, and a democrat whose influence has positively impacted generations of Nigerians.
Alia emphasised Akande’s life of service, discipline, and steadfast commitment to political ideals, calling him a reference point for integrity and honesty.
APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda described Akande as a “priceless asset” whose principled leadership and dedication to democratic values have guided the party through periods of transition.
He called Akande a bridge between generations and a father figure whose counsel has shaped the party’s direction and philosophy.
APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka also celebrated Akande’s contributions to Nigeria’s political development, highlighting his leadership during the historic 2015 elections and his lifelong commitment to progressive governance, discipline, and integrity.
Tinubu also celebrated Mr. Kolawole Peregrino, an administrator and entrepreneur, on his 65th birthday, recognising his decades of service and contributions to public administration and grassroots politics in Lagos State and the South-west.
Akande, widely known as ‘Baba Omo Kekeke,’ remains a symbol of principled leadership and a guiding figure for Nigeria’s political and democratic development.
