Kebbi sets February dates for Argungu fishing festival

The Kebbi State Government has announced that the 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival will hold from February 11 to 14.

The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, made the disclosure after an expanded meeting involving the State Festival Main Committee and the Emirate Local Organising Committee at the Deputy Governor’s Office on Friday.

He also explained that the festival has deep historical roots, noting that it originally began as a peace initiative between the Sokoto Caliphate jihadists and the Kanta Kingdom.

Owing to its cultural and historical importance, the festival was later recognised by UNESCO as an international cultural event.

The Emir also recalled that after the Nigerian Civil War, the festival was used as a platform to promote national unity by bringing together fishermen from different parts of the country.

According to him, this year’s edition is expected to attract dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria and will further project the cultural heritage of the Argungu Kingdom to a global audience.

Also speaking, the Deputy Governor of Kebbi State and Chairman of the State Main Committee, Senator Umar Tafida, said preparations for the festival were already underway.

He further disclosed that several subcommittees had been set up to ensure a smooth and successful event.

Tafida added that arrangements had been made for venue preparation, hospitality, logistics and prizes for winners, urging committee members to remain committed to delivering a successful festival.
