Lagos begins 18-week Mazamaza Bridge repairs

The Lagos State Government has announced an 18-week maintenance programme for the Mazamaza Bridge on the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, with work scheduled to begin on Monday, January 19, 2026.

The repairs, which will run until late May, are aimed at fixing expansion joints and other critical components of the bridge.

The maintenance is also a temporary measure ahead of plans to demolish and reconstruct the structure as part of the Phase 2 extension of the Lagos Blue Line Rail from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the work would be carried out on both the toll and service lanes in both directions.

He assured motorists that the bridge would not be completely closed at any point, as traffic would be managed through phased diversions.

According to the government, the maintenance will be executed in stages to reduce disruption.

An initial preparatory phase will take place in late January, followed by multiple phases covering Badagry-bound lanes first, before shifting to lanes heading into Lagos.

During the repair period, motorists should expect temporary lane reductions and diversions involving the toll lanes, BRT corridor and service lanes.

Traffic officials would be on ground to manage movement and ensure safety.

The state government advised road users to plan their journeys ahead of time, obey traffic signs and comply with instructions from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority throughout the maintenance period.

Officials have explained that tests conducted on the bridge showed it is not strong enough to support rail operations, making its eventual replacement necessary.

The proposed new bridge is expected to meet international standards and serve Lagos for several decades.
