Okpebholo bolsters security in Edo central with donation of 10 patrol vehicles

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has provided ten new patrol vehicles to enhance the capacity of security agencies in the Edo Central Senatorial District.

A statement released by Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, confirmed that the handover took place in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area, with traditional rulers, political leaders, and community representatives in attendance.

Okpebholo said the initiative is aimed at strengthening internal security, ensuring peace, and demonstrating his administration’s commitment to zero tolerance for crime.

He emphasised that the vehicles would enable security personnel to respond promptly and efficiently to emerging threats.

“This is more than a vehicle handover; it reflects our understanding of the challenges security forces face daily and our commitment to addressing them,” Okpebholo stated.

“Security is the foundation for development, and the safety of our people remains non-negotiable.”

He encouraged collaboration between security agencies and local government leaders to implement effective crime-prevention strategies.

Okpebholo also directed the profiling and payroll enrollment of Edo State Security Corps members, hunters, and anti-cultism operatives to ensure proper salary payments across all 18 local councils.

Earlier, a training programme equipped 2,500 security personnel to complement existing Edo State Security Corps members, bringing the number of security operatives to more than 300 per local government area, the governor noted.

Representatives from Esan North East, Esan West, Esan Central, Igueben, and Esan South East discussed operational challenges including limited logistics, poor equipment, herdsmen-related threats, intelligence gaps, and the need for better mobility and communication tools.

Mr. Richard Balogun, Director of Operations for Edo State Security Corps, confirmed that salaries for operatives had been approved, ending months of uncertainty, and commended the government’s renewed commitment to personnel welfare and public safety.

Maj.-Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd), APC Senatorial Leader for Edo Central, urged continuous support for logistics, intelligence resources, and operational funding.

Traditional leaders were also encouraged to monitor and report suspicious activities in their communities.

The Onojie of Uromi, Anselm Aidenojie II, praised the governor’s approach to security, describing it as “practical, inclusive, and results-oriented,” and announced plans to set up an Esan Security Trust Fund with community and diaspora support.

“This is a collective responsibility. Our people must live without fear, knowing their safety is assured,” Aidenojie added.
