2 killed, many hurt in major crash on Lagos–Ibadan expressway

At least two people lost their lives on Sunday after a serious multi-vehicle accident occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, specifically around the Kara Bridge section heading toward Mowe.

Several other commuters sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident, which again highlights persistent safety concerns on the busy corridor.

According to preliminary reports, the crash was triggered by a heavy-duty truck transporting bags of flour.

The vehicle reportedly lost control while approaching the Kara Bridge and ploughed into multiple vehicles on the highway.

Those affected included commercial buses and private cars that were navigating the crowded stretch of road at the time.

Among the vehicles involved was a Toyota Corolla that had been stationary on the bridge due to a punctured tyre.

The force of the collision struck the parked car, leaving its driver injured.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as damaged vehicles blocked lanes and victims cried out for help.

Emergency teams from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) were quickly dispatched to the scene.

The responders worked together to rescue trapped victims, provide first aid, and restore order on the expressway.

Those who sustained injuries were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

LASTMA later confirmed the incident through its official social media platform, stating that the crash involved a truck that overturned, a Toyota Corolla, a RAV4 sports utility vehicle, and two interstate Mazda buses carrying passengers.

Police officers and traffic officials were said to be on ground to manage the situation and prevent further accidents.

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion, leaving motorists stranded for several hours as recovery operations were underway.

Traffic movement only began to ease after officials partially cleared the wreckage and reopened some lanes.

LASTMA noted that its officers, working alongside the FRSC, remained on site to ensure the safety of road users and maintain a steady flow of vehicles.

The latest tragedy has once again drawn attention to the Kara Bridge, a known accident hotspot that has recorded several fatal crashes in recent years.

In late October 2025, a separate multiple-truck collision on the same bridge claimed at least six lives, including that of a police officer.

That earlier incident involved several trucks, one of which was a fuel tanker.

Witnesses said one truck veered off course and slammed into the bridge’s concrete barricade, causing its cabin to detach and plunge into the river below.

One victim was reportedly burned beyond recognition, while the crash led to extensive damage and prolonged gridlock on the expressway.

As of Sunday evening, authorities had yet to release a comprehensive report on the latest crash, including a confirmed figure for casualties.

However, the recurring accidents have intensified calls for stricter traffic control, improved road safety measures, and closer monitoring of heavy-duty vehicles using the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
