AU fixes executive council session for February
The African Union (AU) has announced plans to hold its 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council on February 11 and 12 at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Executive Council is one of the AU’s principal policy-making organs and is made up of Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other designated ministers from member states.
It plays a central role in shaping and coordinating policies on issues of shared interest across the continent.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the AU explained that the council is responsible for formulating recommendations and decisions for submission to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, in line with the objectives of the AU’s Agenda 2063.
According to the statement, the council will, during the session, consider the report of the 51st Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee and deliberate on the African Union’s engagement with the G20.
The meeting will also feature elections and appointments into various AU organs and institutions, alongside a review of the implementation of previous Executive Council decisions on the Skills Audit and Competency Assessment (SACA) process.
In addition, draft legal instruments and issues related to institutional governance will be examined.
The SACA process, which forms part of the AU’s broader institutional reform agenda, is aimed at aligning staff competencies with a new organisational structure to promote efficiency through merit-based placements.
