Oshiomhole backs Tinubu’s progressive tax reforms

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has thrown his full weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s newly introduced tax policy, describing it as fair, progressive, and essential for effective governance.

The former Edo State governor, who represents Edo North in the Senate, said he supported the tax bill during its consideration in the National Assembly and remained convinced that the policy reflects the principles of a pro-people government.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Wednesday, Oshiomhole argued that the reforms are designed to ease the burden on low-income earners while requiring wealthier citizens to contribute more.

According to him, the structure of the policy ensures that those who earn less enjoy tax reliefs, while higher-income earners shoulder a greater share of responsibility.

He maintained that this approach aligns with global standards of progressive taxation and promotes social equity.

Oshiomhole stressed that taxation is the backbone of government financing, dismissing claims that governments generate revenue independently of citizens.

He explained that public funds are derived from taxes paid by individuals and corporations, which are then used to run the affairs of the state.

He further noted that the policy would not negatively affect average workers, particularly members of organised labour, pointing out that most salary earners fall below the income threshold that attracts heavier taxation under the new framework.

Addressing concerns over Value Added Tax (VAT), the senator said ordinary Nigerians have little to fear, as VAT largely applies to non-essential and luxury items.

He criticised what he described as a double standard among citizens who willingly pay VAT abroad but object to similar taxes at home.

Despite public debate surrounding the reforms, President Tinubu reaffirmed in December 2025 that the new tax laws would take effect from January 1, 2026.

The president explained that the measures are aimed at restructuring the tax system, improving coordination, protecting citizens’ dignity, and strengthening trust between the government and the people.

He also called on Nigerians to support the policy, insisting that it is necessary for long-term economic stability and national development.
