Kwankwaso calls Gov. Yusuf’s exit ‘betrayal’

The National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has described Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s resignation from the party as a “cold betrayal of a sacred trust.”

Addressing party loyalists at his residence on Miller Road, Kano, Kwankwaso declared January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”, inspired by social media commentary following the governor’s departure.

He said the day would now be observed annually to remind members of the resignation and its impact on the party.

The NNPP also rejected Yusuf’s claim of an irredeemable internal crisis, labeling it baseless and an afterthought.

In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, the party highlighted its recent successful congresses and two supplementary elections as evidence of stability.

The statement further drew historical parallels with the early 1980s, when Alhaji Abubakar Rimi defected from the PRP to the NPP, taking most elected officials with him, only to face overwhelming electoral defeat in 1983.

The NNPP noted that loyalty and principled leadership eventually prevail, urging the people of Kano to remain calm and patient despite the defection.

Kwankwaso emphasised that the NNPP would continue to uphold the ideals of the Kwankwasiyya movement and called on supporters to maintain faith in the party’s vision for Kano State.

Meanwhile, the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) expressed optimism that Governor Yusuf would formally join the ruling party in the coming days.

State Secretary Ibrahim Sarina confirmed that the party had reserved e-registration number 001 for the governor at his Chiranci-Diso ward.

Sarina said while Yusuf has not officially declared for APC, the party is hopeful he will align soon and is ready to accommodate him and his supporters.

The APC described the potential move as a significant boost for the party, noting that Yusuf is reportedly moving with several elected officials and political appointees.

Sarina said the doors of the APC remain open, emphasising that the party welcomes new members committed to its growth and governance agenda.

Governor Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP, just a day after stepping down from the party, has stirred major political ripples in Kano State.

His departure comes amid broader defections and shifting allegiances in the state, highlighting the fragility of political loyalties and the potential reconfiguration of party dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
