Gunmen attack Bangha monarch in Rivers

The Paramount Ruler of Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, King Suanu Baridam, has survived an attack on his convoy after gunmen opened fire, leaving him and his driver injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening as the first-class traditional ruler was returning from an official engagement in the Okwale community within Khana.
The attack reportedly took place at about 5:30 p.m. along Tekar Sogho Road, a major route connecting the area to the East–West Road.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers ambushed the monarch’s vehicle between Taabaa Junction and Sogho, attempting to force it to stop.
When the driver ignored the attempt and continued driving, the assailants allegedly opened fire on the convoy.
During the shooting, the monarch sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, while his driver was also hit by bullets.
Both victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Sources said the monarch’s condition is stable.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Rivers State Police Command said unknown gunmen emerged from nearby bushes and attacked the black Prado Jeep conveying the traditional ruler.
The police disclosed that the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle were shattered by bullets.
In the statement, the police identified the victim as King T. Y. Baridam, Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, and confirmed that he sustained a gunshot injury to his thigh.
Although the motive behind the attack has not been officially established, security sources indicated that the assailants may have intended to assassinate the monarch.
The attack is said to be the second assassination attempt on King Baridam, raising fresh concerns over the safety of traditional rulers in the state.
Following the incident, police patrol teams were deployed to the area to comb the surroundings and track down the attackers.
The command said investigations had commenced and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible.
The police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and provide any useful information that could assist in the investigation.
The shooting has heightened fears over growing insecurity in parts of Rivers State, particularly the increasing frequency of violent attacks targeting community leaders and public figures.
