NASS proposes voting rights for prisoners in electoral law

The Nigerian National Assembly has proposed an amendment to the Electoral Act that would grant prison inmates the right to vote.

The proposal is part of the Electoral Bill, 2025, which seeks to introduce at least 20 major reforms to enhance election credibility and political accountability.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Leader of the Senate, explained that under Section 12 (1-2) of the Bill, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be obligated to register all eligible inmates in correctional facilities nationwide.

The bill, also proposes that funds for general elections be released at least one year before election day, aiming to reduce operational uncertainty for INEC and strengthen its independence.

The reforms reflect public calls for a more inclusive electoral system that ensures the security of votes and improves the overall management of elections.
