Anambra loses N8bn every Monday due to sit-at-home -Commissioner

The Anambra State Government says it loses an estimated N8 billion every Monday as a result of the sit-at-home order imposed by non-state actors, a practice that is seriously affecting the state’s socio-economic activities.

The State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefoh, made the disclosure during an interview Tuesday on The Morning Brief on Channels Television.

He explained that the repeated closure of markets and businesses, including the popular Onitsha Main Market, constitutes economic sabotage.

Mefoh emphasised that the decision by Governor Chukwuma Soludo to shut down the Onitsha Main Market for one week followed the traders’ failure to open on Monday and is supported by the Executive Council’s prior resolutions.

He added that similar monitoring and enforcement would extend to all 150 markets across Anambra State.

He also noted that the sit-at-home order was abolished four years ago and that the cumulative losses from repeated Monday closures could exceed a trillion naira, underscoring the urgency to end the practice.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted economic activities while holding accountable those who disrupt commerce through unlawful sit-at-home directives.
