Rivers state approves recruitment of 5,000 teachers to boost education sector

The Rivers State Government has approved the recruitment of 5,000 teachers as part of its efforts to improve service delivery across the state’s education sector.
At the state Executive Council’s second meeting of 2026, presided over by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, it was revealed that 3,000 of the new teachers would be deployed to basic and primary schools, while 2,000 will serve in post-primary institutions.
Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma-Odu was also in attendance.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Honor Sirawoo, stated that the recruitment is aimed at strengthening public service delivery, particularly in education.
He emphasised that the recruitment process will be transparent, merit-based, and limited to qualified candidates.
Sirawoo added that with this latest approval, the total number of employees hired under the Fubara administration has risen to about 9,500.
Previous recruitment exercises included 2,000 staff for the health sector, 1,500 for Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, and 1,000 for the Universal Basic Education programme.
Rivers State Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, Chisom Gbali, described the recruitment as a significant boost for his ministry, highlighting the policy’s potential to enhance the state’s workforce and public service delivery.
The government reassured that its focus remains on effective service delivery rather than publicity, with all actions driven by the aim of serving the people of Rivers State.
