Oborevwori tasks DELSU council on academic excellence

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, has charged newly inaugurated members of the Governing Council of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, to approach their duties with integrity, diligence and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
The governor said strong and effective governance was critical to consolidating the university’s reputation as a foremost centre of learning in Nigeria and on the global stage.
Oborevwori gave the charge during the inauguration of Rt. Hon. Festus Agas, Rt. Hon. Frank Enekorogha and Mr. Charles Ajuyah, SAN, as members of the university’s Governing Council.
Describing the occasion as important despite his tight official schedule, the governor noted that governing councils occupy a strategic position in university administration, particularly in setting policy direction and providing institutional oversight.
He explained that the appointments were timely, coming at a period when DELSU is working to further strengthen its academic standing and expand its influence within and beyond the country.
According to him, his administration has remained deliberate in appointing individuals of proven integrity, competence and experience into the governing boards of tertiary institutions across the state.
Governor Oborevwori said the new council members had distinguished themselves in leadership and public service, making them well suited for the responsibilities entrusted to them.
“As members of the Governing Council, you bear the hopes of students, staff, alumni and the people of Delta State,” he said.
He added that their decisions would shape policies, influence academic direction and determine the future of the university for years to come.
He urged the appointees to discharge their duties with transparency and dedication, stressing that the impact of their decisions would extend far beyond their tenure.
The governor expressed confidence that their collective experience would further position DELSU to produce graduates who are academically competent, morally upright and socially responsible.
Responding on behalf of the new council members, Rt. Hon. Festus Agas thanked God and the Delta State Government for the opportunity to serve, describing the appointment as both an honour and a call to higher responsibility.
He assured the governor that the council would work closely with the Vice-Chancellor and the university management to strengthen governance and advance the institution’s mission.
Agas also praised the governor’s leadership style, particularly the harmonious relationship among the arms of government, which he said had contributed to notable achievements within the past two and a half years.
He commended the administration’s strides in peace and security, infrastructure development, human capital growth and healthcare delivery, citing ongoing road projects, youth empowerment initiatives and improvements in the contributory health insurance scheme.
Expressing gratitude for the confidence reposed in them, Agas pledged that the council members would serve with dedication, loyalty and integrity, while offering prayers for continued wisdom and strength for the governor to lead the state to greater heights.
