Wema Bank launches voice banking on upgraded ALAT platform

Wema Bank has unveiled a voice-enabled banking feature on its digital platform, ALAT, following the launch of an upgraded version of the application, dubbed “ALAT: The Evolution.”

The upgraded platform, officially launched on January 12, 2026, introduces a virtual assistant named SAW, which allows users to execute banking transactions through voice commands without manual data entry.

The bank said the assistant offers gender-based customization and leverages voice recognition technology that adapts to individual speech patterns, with an additional passcode required for verification.

Moruf Oseni, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, explained that the innovation aims to enhance efficiency, reliability, and convenience for customers.

“The feature is designed to help users complete transactions quickly without interrupting their daily activities,” Oseni said.

He added that the upgraded platform integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced security features, providing a holistic banking experience for users both within and outside Nigeria.

“When we launched ALAT in 2017, our goal was to provide a banking solution ahead of its time.

”The upgraded version goes further, leveraging emerging technologies to deliver a game-changing digital banking experience.

”A simple voice command can reduce a process that would have taken a full minute to just a few seconds,” Oseni stated.

Beyond voice banking, the upgraded ALAT includes Tap & Pay, a contactless payment feature enabling secure transactions between users in close proximity, and Uptime Prediction, which displays service availability of recipient banks before processing transactions.

Oseni described the innovations as part of Wema Bank’s ongoing commitment to AI-driven, customer-centric solutions.

“Every detail of the new ALAT is strategic, ensuring your virtual assistant responds to your voice patterns and lifestyle.

”This is the future of banking, and Wema Bank has delivered it,” he said.

The bank said the upgraded platform demonstrates its vision to provide 24/7 accessible, technologically advanced banking services that meet the demands of modern life.
