Dangote Refinery can meet Nigeria’s fuel demand, says company

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reaffirmed its ability to meet Nigeria’s domestic fuel demand and more, signaling a potential shift away from reliance on imported petroleum products.

In a statement released Thursday, the refinery declared that it can supply 75 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily, surpassing the country’s estimated daily consumption of 50 million litres.

In addition, the refinery reported the capacity to provide 25 million litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) per day, against an estimated national demand of 14 million litres.

For aviation fuel, Dangote Refinery said it could supply 20 million litres daily, far above Nigeria’s peak domestic requirement of 4 million litres.

According to the company, these volumes above prevailing demand create a crucial supply buffer, enhance market stability, and reduce dependence on imports, particularly during periods of high demand or logistical disruptions.

“The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery would like to reiterate our capability to supply petroleum products of the highest international quality standard to marketers and stakeholders,” the statement said.

It highlighted that its daily supply capacity across PMS, AGO, and aviation fuel.

Industry analysts have noted that the refinery’s ability to supply volumes above consumption levels strengthens inventory cover, reduces the need for emergency imports, and bolsters the resilience of Nigeria’s domestic fuel supply chain.

The refinery emphasised its commitment to regulatory compliance and close collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Dangote said its operations align with national efforts to ensure market stability, orderly downstream operations, and a gradual transition from fuel import dependence to domestic refining.

Furthermore, the company said it continued to engage with market participants to ensure that local refining translates into tangible benefits for consumers, including reliable supply, competitive pricing, and improved market discipline nationwide.
