Glo leads Nigeria’s telecom transformation, NCC confirms

Nigeria’s digital transformation received a significant boost as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Globacom (Glo) strengthened a partnership grounded in transparency, strategic investment, and consumer confidence.
Through its Industry Performance Reports, developed in collaboration with global network intelligence firm Ookla under the QoS/QoE Crowdsourcing Project, the NCC is setting a new standard for accountability in the telecoms sector.
These quarterly, data-driven reports provide independent insights into network performance, coverage, and real-world user experience, measured across operators, states, and regions.
A senior NCC official described the initiative as “sunlight and substance”, emphasising that it allows Nigerians to clearly see which operators deliver consistent service, rewarding excellence while exposing underperformance.
Within this framework, Glo has emerged as a top performer, supported by decades of strategic investment and continuous network modernisation.
The company’s infrastructure initiatives—from one of Nigeria’s largest fibre-optic backbones to upgraded radio access and core networks—reflect a long-term vision for reliable service.
A member of Glo’s executive leadership explained,
“We invest as if Nigeria’s tomorrow depends on what we build today. Our goal is not to be loud, but to be lasting.”
The NCC-Ookla analytics reinforce what many subscribers already experience: Glo’s network is built for substance, not spectacle.
The operator delivers stable speeds, low latency, and consistent service through fibre-fed sites, resilient backhaul, and intelligent traffic management.
The reports also measure network performance along major road corridors, crucial for commerce and daily life.
Glo’s extensive fibre infrastructure ensures fewer call drops, faster data connections, and uninterrupted streaming for commuters and travelers.
On the urban-rural divide, Glo’s strategy of extending fibre closer to base stations and modernising legacy sites is narrowing performance gaps.
Areas that previously suffered poor coverage are now experiencing reliable connectivity, benefiting both businesses and consumers.
Preparing for 5G and Beyond
Glo’s deliberate approach to next-generation technology is also highlighted. NCC’s 5G Reality Check evaluates coverage alongside actual user experience.
By prioritising strong 4G foundations and fibre-fed sites, Glo is ensuring that future 5G deployments will be credible, inclusive, and sustainable.
The reports further examine device impact, including battery life and heat generation. Here again, Glo’s optimisation protocols and modern core network infrastructure reduce unnecessary signalling, enhancing user comfort in everyday use.
For users, the improvements are tangible. Segun Adeleye, a small-business owner in Ibadan, said,
“My work runs on data. With Glo, I just connect and go. That confidence is everything.”
With the NCC providing transparency and Glo delivering consistent leadership and investment, Nigeria’s telecom industry is entering a new era—one defined by performance rather than promises.
Regulation is the lighthouse; leadership is the ship. Together, NCC and Glo are steering Nigeria towards a faster, fairer, and more connected future.
