Lagos Assembly demands release of abducted corps member

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called for the immediate release of Binuyo Lateefah, a Mass Communication graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic, who was abducted on January 22 while traveling to her NYSC orientation camp in Taraba State.

Lateefah was reportedly kidnapped along the Kogi axis, with her abductors demanding a N30 million ransom.

Raising the matter during plenary, Hon. Omolara Olumegbon urged swift collaboration between federal and state authorities to secure her safe release.

She recommended that the Governor of Lagos State liaise with his Kogi counterpart to facilitate prompt intervention.

Other lawmakers joined the call. Noheem Adams praised President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to improve national security, while Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, commended the Nigerian military but stressed the need for intensified action in security hotspots.

Hon. Abiodun Tobun further suggested reviewing NYSC deployment procedures to minimize risks for prospective corps members posted to distant or high-risk locations.

Speaking on the incident, the Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described the abduction as deeply disheartening, noting that young Nigerians eager to serve their country should not face life-threatening dangers after completing their education.

He urged immediate government action to protect and rescue Lateefah.

The Assembly’s demand reflects growing concerns over the safety of prospective corps members, particularly in regions prone to kidnappings and other security threats.
