FCT workers suspend strike after agreement

The industrial action by workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been officially suspended following a breakthrough agreement between the FCT Administration and organised labour.

The resolution followed an overnight conciliatory meeting convened by the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, at the request of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the FCT, Senator Mohammed Bomoi.

The meeting, which began at 11:45 p.m. on Monday, concluded at 3:51 a.m. on Tuesday, marking the end of days of halted public activities in the territory.

Organised labour, under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), described the discussions as “extensive and frank,” leading to the amicable resolution of all grievances raised by members of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

Following the agreement, JUAC members and affiliates of the NLC and TUC working in the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (MFCT) were directed to resume work immediately, restoring industrial peace and enabling the continuation of critical public services and ongoing government projects.

Minister Wike assured workers of mutual respect and continued engagement. “No employee will face victimisation for participating in the strike,” he emphasised, highlighting the administration’s commitment to maintaining a harmonious working environment.

Both parties also agreed to withdraw all pending cases at the National Industrial Court (NIC) relating to the dispute, effectively removing legal barriers to the full resumption of work.

The suspension of the strike comes as a relief to residents of the FCT, whose access to essential services had been disrupted over the past days.

The prompt resolution underscores the value of dialogue and collaboration between the government and organised labour in maintaining stability and continuity in public service delivery.
