APC in Kano State faces deepening crisis over party leadership clash

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State is grappling with heightened internal tensions after a clash between factions loyal to Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje over party leadership control.

The dispute intensified following the reported removal of Mutari Ishaq, a Ganduje-backed party leader in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, by a group of party stakeholders.

At a stakeholders’ meeting attended by representatives from all 13 wards and other party leaders, a unanimous decision was allegedly taken to expel Ishaq from the party.

The meeting, initially convened on Sunday to promote unity between the Ganduje-led faction and the Barau-aligned group, instead exposed deep divisions.

Both factions held separate meetings at different venues, underscoring their inability to agree on a unified negotiation platform.

The Ganduje faction reportedly met with party leaders including APC Kano Municipal Chairman Alhaji Sani Abubakar Mai Fata Sharada, Muntari Ishaq Yakasai, Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, Engr. Sagir Koki, Hon. Salim Hashim Gwangwazo, Nura Hussain, Hon. Nabil Sarki Daneji, Hon. Ibrahim Kankarofi, and Hon. Kabiru Labour.

Meanwhile, the Barau Jibrin-aligned group convened separately at Sultanate Suite, led by Hon. Salisu Maje Ahmed Gwangwazo, Malam Ibrahim Kankarofi, Hon. Fa’izu Alfindiki, Hon. Dan Bello, Alhaji Hamza Darma, and Barrister Faruk Iya Sambo.

Reports indicate that supporters of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf sided with the Ganduje faction during deliberations, discussing strategies and resolutions regarding the party’s future.

Kano Municipal Local Government Area, one of the most populous in the state and a key political battleground, has become central to efforts to assert control over party machinery ahead of upcoming elections.

The developments signal a growing rift within APC in Kano, raising concerns about internal cohesion and the party’s readiness for future electoral contests.
