Niger Delta games torch kicks off 9-State tour from Calabar

The Torch for the 2nd Niger Delta Games embarked on its much-anticipated journey on Monday, February 9, beginning in Calabar, Cross River State, and set to tour all nine participating states of the Niger Delta region.
The Torch, symbolising unity, sporting excellence, and the spirit of the Games, will travel through the capitals of the region before culminating in the lighting of the Games cauldron at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
In Calabar, Torch bearer Patience George, accompanied by officials from the State Sports Commission and a team of athletes, led a vibrant procession from the U.J. Esuene Stadium to the Governor’s office.
They were warmly received by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, representing Governor Bassey Otu, and Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, organisers of the Games.
The procession was a colourful spectacle, featuring young men and women adorned in Calabar Carnival costumes, dancing to traditional Efik music played from speakers mounted on decorated trucks.
The event drew large crowds of excited onlookers who lined the streets to witness the pageantry.
Deputy Governor Odey, addressing the athletes, assured them of adequate equipment and welfare support to excel at the Games.
He urged competitors to maintain fairness and sportsmanship throughout the event.
Sir Itiako Ikpokpo commended the State Liaison Committee for organising an engaging Torch Tour and encouraged other participating states to design unique and entertaining presentations that showcase their local culture.
According to the official Games itinerary, the Torch will visit:
Akwa Ibom State on February 10
Abia State on February 11
Imo State on February 12
Rivers State on February 13
Bayelsa State on February 14
Delta State on February 16
Ondo State on February 18.
The Torch will ignite the Games cauldron on the opening day, symbolising the official commencement of the competition.
On the closing day, it will be ceremonially handed over to the next host state, maintaining a tradition of continuity and regional camaraderie.
The Niger Delta Games, organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited and sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), is aimed at promoting youth engagement, sporting excellence, and unity across the region.
