FG unveils major airspace security overhaul

The Federal Government has announced a comprehensive plan to modernise aviation and airspace security nationwide, unveiling major radar upgrades and the deployment of advanced counter-drone systems.

In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, the Presidency said the initiative is aimed at reinforcing national security and modernising airspace management across Nigeria.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo explained that the upgrade would extend radar coverage beyond the current 5,000-foot limit and introduce counter-UAV technologies, including drone jammers, to protect airports and Nigerian Air Force bases nationwide.

The Ministry also revealed ongoing discussions with Qatar’s Barzan Holdings to integrate world-class command, control, and surveillance systems into Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force.

Officials said the partnership is designed to improve threat detection, build local technical capacity, enhance national security, and advance technological development in airspace management.

The announcement reflects a renewed push by the Federal Government to tighten airspace monitoring and deploy cutting-edge defence technologies amid rising security concerns.
