Omokri explains acceptance of ambassadorial role

Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has defended his decision to serve under President Bola Tinubu despite previously criticising the administration.
Omokri spoke on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The former presidential aide under Goodluck Jonathan had been known as a vocal critic of Tinubu before the 2023 elections.
He was confronted with past remarks suggesting he would not work with the Tinubu government.
Responding, Omokri said his earlier comments had been misinterpreted.
According to him, he never ruled out serving Nigeria, but expressed reservations about holding certain positions.
He explained that during discussions with government officials, he made clear there were roles he could not accept due to his past statements.
However, he said the ambassadorial position was different because it represents service to the nation rather than personal allegiance.
“As an ambassador, I will be representing Nigeria,” he said, stressing that his loyalty would be to the country.
Tinubu had nominated Omokri among a list of non-career ambassadorial candidates released late last year.
The list included several prominent political figures and former public office holders.
Some of the nominations generated public debate, particularly regarding the inclusion of high-profile names.
Omokri said his acceptance of the role was based on personal conviction.
He maintained that he was transparent about his previous positions during consultations with government representatives.
The ambassador-designate also revealed that his views on President Tinubu have evolved.
He said he now believes Tinubu’s leadership offers the best prospects for Nigeria.
The remarks signal a significant shift for Omokri, who was once one of the president’s outspoken critics.
His nomination has since been confirmed by the Senate along with other ambassadorial appointments.
Omokri said his focus going forward would be advancing Nigeria’s interests abroad.
