FRSC warns motorists ahead of valentine’s day

As Nigerians prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day this weekend, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists against drunk driving and speeding, emphasizing the importance of safety and responsible conduct on the nation’s roads.
The warning was delivered by Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed in a statement released on Friday through the FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.
The Corps Marshal cautioned drivers to avoid reckless behaviour, which he noted often leads to traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities, particularly during festive periods.
“Our operational and educational measures have been activated nationwide to safeguard road users throughout the Valentine’s Day period,” the Corps Marshal said.
He directed commanding officers across the country to intensify their efforts through massive deployment for enhanced visibility, strict traffic control, and enforcement of regulations.
As part of the enforcement strategy, FRSC operatives will be equipped with breathalysers and radar guns to identify and intercept motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or violating speed limits.
“This is to prevent needless deaths, injuries, and damage to property,” Mohammed stated.
Highlighting the significance of the day, the Corps Marshal described Valentine’s Day as a global celebration of love and goodwill, commemorating the life of Saint Valentine, who exemplified care and kindness during his lifetime.
He stressed that the day should be marked responsibly, with safe driving practices at the forefront.
Motorists were specifically warned that any infractions would attract immediate sanctions, as the FRSC affirmed its commitment to upholding traffic laws without compromise.
Drivers were also encouraged to utilize the FRSC’s toll-free emergency line 122 to report accidents, road obstructions, or reckless driving incidents.
“The presence of our personnel on the roads is for the protection of lives and property. We urge all road users to cooperate fully with FRSC officers deployed across the country,” Mohammed said.
Additionally, the Corps Marshal appealed to parents and guardians to counsel young drivers, noting that youths are particularly vulnerable to risky behaviour during festive periods.
He emphasised that safety is a collective responsibility and called on the public to comply with safety guidelines to ensure a joyous and accident-free celebration.
The FRSC’s proactive measures this Valentine’s Day reflect its ongoing commitment to reducing road traffic accidents and fatalities, particularly during periods when celebrations and alcohol consumption are expected to increase.
The Corps’ campaign combines law enforcement, public education, and community engagement, aiming to foster a culture of safe driving across Nigeria.
