Gov Diri, siblings honour late father at quiet memorial in Sampou

Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, on Friday joined members of his family to commemorate the life and legacy of their late father, Pa Abraham Joseph Michael Diri, during a subdued memorial ceremony held at the family mausoleum in Sampou community, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.

The remembrance, described as intentionally low-key, marked the anniversary of the passing of Pa Diri, a respected retired headmaster and devoted layreader in the Anglican Church, who died on February 12, 2023, at the age of 88.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Diri explained that the event was deliberately scaled down in view of the recent loss of his deputy governor.

He noted that the family had planned a quiet moment of prayer and wreath-laying but were surprised by the presence of numerous dignitaries and well-wishers who turned out to pay their respects.

According to the governor, the show of solidarity from friends, political associates and community leaders deeply encouraged the family.

He reflected on the values instilled in him and his siblings by their father, emphasising discipline, integrity and reverence for God as the pillars of their upbringing.

“In light of the death of our deputy governor, I felt this year’s remembrance should be modest,” Diri said.

“We intended it to be a simple family gathering for prayers and wreath-laying.

”However, seeing the number of people who came to honour our father is truly humbling.

”We are grateful for the love and support.”

He added that their father’s firm guidance and faith-based upbringing shaped their character and life choices, leaving a legacy that continues to influence the family.

Delivering a short exhortation, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Religion, Rev. Godspower Asingba, urged attendees to live upright and purposeful lives so they would be remembered for positive contributions after their passing.

The ceremony reached its climax with the laying of wreaths by Governor Diri and his siblings at the mausoleum.

Among those present were the governor’s wives, Dr. Gloria Diri and Justice Patience Diri; Senator representing Kaduna South, Sunday Katung; Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere; his deputy, Rt. Hon. Michael Ogbere; members of the State Assembly; Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Yenagoa, Irorodamie Komonibo; commissioners; the Chaplain of the Government House King of Glory Chapel, Pastor David Yala; and other political appointees.

The memorial, though simple in arrangement, underscored the enduring influence of a father remembered for his service to education, faith and community.
