32 feared dead as bandits launch coordinated attacks in Niger State

At least 32 farmers were feared dead on Saturday following a series of violent attacks by armed bandits on Tugan-Makeri, Konsoko, and Pissa communities in the Borgu Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.
According to residents, the first assault occurred at Tugan-Makeri in Konkoso Ward around 3:00 a.m., leaving six people dead.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers later struck Konsoko and Pissa at approximately 6:00 a.m., firing indiscriminately and setting several buildings ablaze, including a local police outpost.
Sources said 26 people were killed in these subsequent attacks, though the precise number of casualties in Pissa remains unclear.
Hassan Abdullahi, a resident of the area, told journalists that more than 200 assailants were involved in Saturday’s raids, which lasted several hours.
“The attacks began around 6:00 a.m. and continued until about 10:00 a.m.,” he said.
He added that the affected communities are located roughly 200 kilometres from the Nigerian Air Force Base in New Bussa, the headquarters of Borgu LGA.
Confirming the attacks, the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the Tugan-Makeri assault occurred at around 3:00 a.m., resulting in six deaths, multiple house fires, and an unspecified number of kidnappings.
He further confirmed that the bandits moved on to Konsoko, although details of the attack there remain unclear.
Abiodun said in a statement: “On 14/2/2026, at about 6:00 a.m., a report was received indicating that at approximately 3:00 a.m., suspected bandits invaded Tunga-Makeri village via Shafachi District in Borgu LGA.
During the attack, six persons lost their lives, some houses were set ablaze, and a yet-to-be-ascertained number of persons were abducted.
The terrorists were also reported to have moved to Konkoso village, while other details remain sketchy.
Meanwhile, joint security teams have been mobilised to the scene for assessment, and efforts to rescue the victims are ongoing.”
Local authorities and security operatives are currently conducting assessments and rescue operations, while residents continue to live in fear following one of the deadliest attacks in the area in recent months.
