Kwankwaso/Obi support group condemns proposed U.S. Bill targeting Nigerian politician

The Kwankwaso/Obi Support Group has denounced a proposed bill reportedly introduced by members of the United States Congress, warning that it seeks to undermine the political career of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

In a statement issued Saturday, the group’s leader, Abba Sadauki Gwale, alleged that the proposed imposition of visa restrictions on Kwankwaso is politically motivated, aimed at curbing his rising influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gwale described the measure as an attempt at external interference in Nigeria’s internal political affairs, urging Nigerians to resist such interventions.

“Kwankwaso has been a vocal critic of the current administration on issues of insecurity, governance, and economic development,” the statement read.

“The timing of this bill is suspicious, coming at a moment when he is gaining popularity. It is difficult not to view this as an effort to undermine his reputation and restrict his influence.”

The support group further questioned the rationale behind the proposed legislation, noting that there is no concrete evidence linking Kwankwaso to any allegations cited in the bill.

It warned that approval of such measures could set a dangerous precedent, potentially allowing foreign actors to influence domestic political participation in Nigeria.

Gwale called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and allow its democratic institutions to function independently, free from external pressure.

He urged policymakers to focus on strengthening institutional frameworks and promoting inclusive dialogue, rather than targeting individual political figures.

The statement underscores rising tensions around international scrutiny of Nigerian politicians, especially in the lead-up to critical national elections, and reflects growing concerns over foreign involvement in domestic political matters.
